All8.com

To find out the bpm of a song or music you can tap along with this tool: all8.com/tools/bpm.htm

Click where it says “Touch here” then start tapping to the beat and the BPM will be displayed. The longer you can tap for at an unchanging tempo, the more accurate the reading will be.

To then set a metronome, try “Nearest Whole” number, test the metronome and when you’re happy, time to get playing!

Zoom

We have been using Zoom in our studio for around three years after using Skype for years. We highly recommend Zoom for both its functionality and design and stability (of course – you will need a good internet connection).

iMovie

We use iMovie to deliver our online lessons and edit movies. You will be surprised at it’s many features – nothing like a quick google to see if you can get your desired affect when editing something for students.

YAMAHA METRONOME APP

Whilst this App is a couple of dollars, we think, for less than a cup of coffee, it’s worth getting due to its sophisticated features for the modern drummer. Unlike most of the free metronome apps available this app:

  • Has a mixer that includes triplets
  • My favourite thing is the time signatures. It includes whacky time-signatures like 5/4, 7/4, 10/4 and 11/4 etc – all of which we use  for our more senior players
  • It has a ‘library’ whereby you can set a tempo and refer to your song when opening the app – perfect for practice.
  • It has a ‘tap’ feature’ so you can tap in a tempo to see what it is.
  • It flashes a different colour on the 1. – This is super important for beginners or those that struggle with timing to ensure they sync back up with the 1.
  • It’s Yamaha – and we think Yamaha are a pretty cool brand.
